Helmet Guy Manuel

This helmet took me about 4 months to complete.  After watching an inspiration video online, I decided I wanted to try to make one.  This was the first time I had to learn how to prepare a resin cast for chroming as well as how to get the electronic LEDs and chasers to work for the sequencing.

Surprisingly, this helmet has good visibility in normal conditions; however, it can get foggy as there is very little room for ventilation.

The process

Resin Cast

Resin cast with gold chrome and tinted PETG visor.  Separate ear domes.

  • I bought the resin cast with tinted PETG visor and two separate ear domes.  This was a huge starting point for me as I did not have to develop a mold or do the helmet casting.
  • Most of the work done was learning how to prepare the cast for chroming. Filling in imperfections.
  • The tinted visor had to be polished a bit with PlastX to provide a little more clarity without losing the tint.

Electronics

Home made electronics with pre-programmed LED chaser.

  • For the sequencing of the LEDs, I used a tiny LED chaser that can run on low voltage.  This LED chaser had enough outputs that I could leverage for the remaining of the boards.
  • The rest of the electronics had to be handmade using breadboard and a lot of soldering.
